Chew On This

Having read Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation a few years ago, I was excited to read another one of his books. There are a lot of similarities between the two but I definitely learned a few new things from Chew On This. Here are some points and facts which I found particularly interesting:

  • NeuroMarketing – some companies who wish to market to children use this technique. Scientists put a child in a brain scanner and study their neural activity as they watch commercials.
  • A sample school lunch menu: M – Lasagna with garlic bread; T – Subway; W – McDonald’s; Th – Burger King; F – Potato bar with toppings (T-Th remain the same all year). (more…)

The Naughty List

Bill Marler released his Food Safety News Naughty List 2009 this morning. It’s quite interesting. One of my favorites:

“FDA for its failure to control ridiculous health claims like Kellogg’s claiming that Cocoa Krispies are a “Smart Choice” because it “helps support your child’s immunity.” (See “Do Krispies Boost Kids’ Immune Systems?” Nov 01, 2009)”

Hmm maybe I should file this under the comics section too….

I’m watching “The Future of Food” right now (great movie, review coming soon) and decided I need to add a “Comics” category to my blog featuring a random assortment of things I find funny and ironic. Enjoy.
